A rare and exotic animal, alpacas are gaining popularity around the world. Their luxurious fleece is prized for its softness, strength and light weight.

They are also easy to raise, produce excellent fibre and make wonderful pets. If you are interested in learning more about them, Windy Hill Farm is hosting an event on September 29 and 30 to help spread the word about this interesting creature.

Alpaca Wool

Alpaca duvet wool is an eco-friendly, luxury fibre that has a low carbon footprint. Compared to synthetic fibres, alpaca wool decomposes much faster and has a lower environmental impact.

It is hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, naturally water-repellent, and extremely durable. It is also extremely soft and comfortable to the touch.

It is made into a variety of products, from very simple and inexpensive garments sewed by indigenous communities to sophisticated and expensive items such as suits. In the United States, groups of smaller alpaca breeders have banded together to create ‘Fiber Cooperatives’ making it cheaper for consumers to buy these alpaca products NZ.

Alpaca Knitwear

Alpaca knitwear is one of the most luxurious and precious fibers in the world. It’s soft as cashmere, warmer and lighter than wool, and has no lanolin which makes it hypoallergenic.

Alpaca wool is processed similar to sheep’s wool but it does not contain lanolin so there is no itchy feel to it and it dries quicker than merino or mohair. The fleece is sorted, dehaired, carded, spun, and woven or knitted into the final garments.
